For homebuilders, one of the FAA’s latest certification changes could mean more freedom when it comes time to put a newly completed aircraft through it’s first flights. The updated guidance also reshapes how original airworthiness certificates are handled. The FAA has released Revision “M” of Order 8130.2, it’s guidance governing aircraft airworthiness certification. The update arrives as the agency implements the second phase of its Modernization of Special Airworthiness Certification, or MOSAIC, rule, which took effect for airworthiness certification on July 24th, 2026. The next major piece of the 2026 Affordable Flying Expo is officially in place, as online ticketing is now open for the November 13–15 event at the SUN ’n FUN Aerospace Expo campus in Lakeland, Florida. And with MOSAIC now fundamentally changing the landscape of personal aviation, this year’s AFE may be arriving at one of the most interesting moments the sport and recreational flying community has seen in decades. The U.S. military this week used a laser to shoot down three drones along the U.S.-Mexico border that were allegedly operated by drug cartels, the Pentagon said Thursday. The three unmanned aircraft systems were shot down late Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning using an “Army Multipurpose High Energy Laser system,” according to U.S. Northern Command, which is responsible for overseeing certain military defense operations in North America.
